In a press statement issued on 19/03/2010 HURINET-U condemned the barbaric destruction of Kasubi tombs which is a National heritage and a symbol of identity in Uganda.

The nature of security, protection and preservation given to important historic sites throughout the country is questionable. Most of such sights have been neglected and are in danger of destruction if government and stakeholders do not act to have them preserved and secured. With this HURINET –U recommends that a national framework for the protection and management of historic sites be put in place.
HURINET-U is concerned that lives have been lost in the scuffle that ensured. Loss of life from such incidences mainly results from excessive use of force and firearms which are in hands of un-uniformed security officers. We call upon government to gazette police uniforms and ensure that only uniformed security officers are armed. There should be a control on the number of firearms in the hands of private individuals and strong measures should be taken to ensure only trained personnel use firearms.
In the context of the subject matter HURINET-U called upon government to carry out immediate investigations on the cause of fire in Kasubi and those responsible be brought to book. HURINET -U is concerned that recommendations from previous investigations have not been implemented and no public accountability of such violations have ever been made. We recommend that investigations in the mysterious fires such as those in schools and markets be made public and those responsible be brought to book.
Government should work towards building trust between members of public and the police. Said the National Coordinator HURINET Mr. Ndifuna Mohammed.
